National Farmers Market Week is August 7-13, 2016. In celebration, markets across the country will host activities such as tasting days, guest chefs, local celebrity and politician appearances, cooking demonstrations, educational events, book signings and more! The US Senate and House of Representatives will not be in session that week, so chances are good your elected official will be available to visit your market.

Take this time to remind them that farmers markets are more than just an outlet for fresh produce and friendly farmers. According to USDA statistics, these grassroots venues have increased in number by over 60 percent since 2009 to more than 8,500 today. In addition, these markets preserve farmland, stimulate local economies, increase access to fresh nutritious food, improve community health and promote sustainability.
